Major Speech Assignment #1: Video
Hillary Clinton: "Role Models"
https://youtu.be/mrX3Ql31URAClinton's ad uses pathos, influencing the emotions of the audience by using children. Children represent innocence and the future, and adults want to protect children. The commercial utilizes changes in imagery to evoke certain responses in the audience. For example, the lighting is dark when showing Trump and light when showing Hillary. The children's faces are upset and anxious when Trump is on the television screen, but neutral or more excited and hopeful when Hillary appears. The commercial adds to this effect through the music and chosen speech excerpts. The music is quiet and in a minor key during Trump's clip, and becomes louder and more positive and upbeat for Hillary. In addition, the clips of Trump that were chosen were deliberately chosen to show him in a negative light; makers of the ad purposely chose to use footage of the worst things he has said or done, and opted to use more positive footage of Hillary.
The commercial attempted to appeal to voters through the use of children, which is a common factor among both parties and can have a non-partisan appeal.
